September. Found in open woods and dry meadows. Location:
Strasburg Reservoir, GWNF, VA.

Trout Lily (Erythronium
americanum): Stream-side plant but has also been
found on PA ridge tops. Blooms in May. Location:
Pond Run Trail,
Green Ridge State Forest, MD.

Large
Yellow Wood Sorrel, Oxalis Grandis: Seems to be more
scarce than its Pink/purple cousin. Grows in open woods and
along roadsides. Location: Massanutten Mt Tr, GWNF, VA.

Celadine (Chelidonium majus): Blooms May-June. Can
grow to 18 inches. Location: AT in SNP, VA.

Fringed Loosestrife (Lysimachia
ciliata):
Grows in moist areas. Location: Williams River, Tea Creek
Backcountry, MNF, WV.

Pale Jewel Weed (Impatiens
pallida): AKA Touch-Me-Not. Summer Bloomer.
Location: SNP, Nicholson Hollow Trail.

Yellow
Lady's-Slippers (Cypripedum calceolus): In the orchid
family. Related to Pink Lady's-Slippers. Two flowers on one
stem (as shown here) is a rarity. Location G. Richard

Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia
humifusa): Just starting to
bloom here. Location: Billy Goat Trail, Great

Rattlesnake-Weed (Hieracium venosum): Gets its name because it
thrives in the same habitat as Rattle snakes.
Blooms April to September. The blue-green Oval
leaves with dark purple veins are quite
conspicuous.

Common Yellow Wood Sorrel, Either Oxalis
stricta or europaea. Considered a weed in
gardens and sidewalks. Location: Pine Lick
Trail, Green Ridge SF, MD.

Marsh Marigold (Caltha
palustris): As the name implies these
flowers love water. Bloom April-June. Location:
Cranberry Glades, MNF, WV.

Cinquefoil: One of several species. Grows to
about a foot. Note the saw toothed-lanceolete
leaves. Location: Pine Creek, PA above the Grand
Canyon.

Smooth False Foxglove (Aureolaria laevigata):
Grows in a semi-parasitic relationship with oak. Summer
bloomer. There are 3 varieties of False Foxglove all
with similar flowers. Location: Rockytop Trail, SNP, VA.

Round-Leaved Yellow Violet (Viola rotundifolia): Leaves the same as common purple Violets but the
flower petals are quite different. Location: Shenk's Ferry
Wildflower Preserve, Holtwood Recreation Are, PA.

Whorled Loostrife, Lysimachia quadrifolia: 4 leaved
whorls of lanceolet leaves with small yellow flowers w/red

Wild
Oats/Bellwort (Uvularia sessilfolia): Stems grow
through the leaves as the flowers nod. Grows on dry mountain
trails. Blooms in May. Location: AT in SNP, VA.

Very small flowers. Location: Shenk's Ferry Wild

Butter-and-Eggs (Lineria
vulgaris): In the Snapdragon family. A European
introduction. Blooms throughout the summer. Individual
flowers reminiscent of "eggs frying in butter". Location: AT
- Tar Jacket Ridge, GWNF, VA.

Wood
Betony or Lousewort (Pedicularis cacanadensis):
In the Snap Dragon family. Can also be found in the wild
in red or red/yellow. Domestic varieties come in even
more colors. Blooms April to June. When the flowering is
finished the hairy basal leaves lie flat on the ground.

Clover (Trifolium
agrarium)
: Grows along edges and roadsides. Blooms in
summer. Location: Cranberry Wilderness.

Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria): Bushy shrub in the pea
family. Grows along trails and roads. Location: Three Pond

Primrose (Oenothera biennis):
Summer Bloomer. Grows over 4 feet tall. Sunny, wet areas.

Squaw Root(Herniaria
glabra ): Parasitic plant devoid of Chlorophyll. Gets
it's nutrients from the roots of Oak trees. Location:
Long Pond Trail, GRSF, MD.
